Thousands Attend Barry Island NYD Swim

It might be cold and wet outside but that didn’t stop thousands of people braving the wintry conditions to run in the sea for New Years Day swim.

The swim started in 1984 and has become a permanent fixture for the festive calendar in Barry each year. People of all ages run in for charity, in fancy dress or just to shake the new years eve hangover off, and the event seems to get bigger each year.

The swim was officially started by the mayor of Barry, and even though the conditions weren’t amazing, people came out in force.

RNLI Barry and local lifeguards were on hand keeping revellers safe whilst in the freezing Island sea.

Barry Parkrun started off the day and then there was a free fitness session from Joel Palmer fitness. But the main event is the mad dash for the sea and usually everyone runs in twice!

Some people like to do the swim in fancy dress, other in the standard swimsuits.

There was even a few Barry Town United fans in the sea!

How far did you make it out?

One thing is for certain, it was absolutely freezing down there today!

Overall it was a great event on Barry Island and the swim has become the focal point of the festive calendar in Barry. The Island was packed and all traders opened early to welcome revellers to the Island. If you have any pictures of videos be sure to share them with us! Now, it’s time to get warm again!

Happy new year everyone!
