New Shop Local App set to be piloted in Barry

A new shop local smartphone app is set to be released in the New Year thanks to two local and creative entrepreneurs.

Nicholas Sellen and Charlotte Groves both Barry residents, have developed the app for and with local businesses with the aim to get more people shopping local! The innovative entrepreneurs have a passion for creating useful technology with a public purpose, so they co-founded Adventive Ltd, a small software development company based in Barry. Their first product, AppServe, will be piloted exclusively in Barry in the new year.

Charlotte Said:

“We live together in Barry near the town centre, and have been together for 8 ½ years. We love our town, love living by the sea, and simply want the chance to use our passion and skills to help our local community.”

How the idea came about:

“We started the businesses after travelling the world for 6 months in 2015, and were inspired by the use of technology in countries like Japan. It really was the trip of a lifetime, but when we returned we saw such a gap between small businesses and technology that we thought that we could help.”

They told TDV that they are developing AppServe to help people re-discover the hidden gems on our high streets.

“Wales has the highest percentage of empty retail spaces in the UK, and our high streets are struggling to survive. More independent businesses close than are opened every year, because most people don’t understand the many benefits that shopping locally can have.

“Over half of the money we spend with local traders is fuelled back into the local economy; that means schools, services and support, and a vibrant and thriving community.”

Nicholas commented:

“We support independent traders wholeheartedly, in fact Charlotte still works part-time in a family-run restaurant in Barry while AppServe develops. We know first-hand just how fantastic our local businesses can be, and in a world where technology is overtaking everything we don’t want to see them being left behind. So we’re hoping to give them a new way to reach out and tell their story with AppServe, where they can showcase their products, offer exclusive deals and discounts to AppServe users, and show people that they don’t need to leave Barry to find the best places to eat and shop!”

Their plans ahead

AppServe will pilot exclusively in Barry in early 2017, and will be free to download. Local businesses are already on board including traders on Barry’s High Street, Park Crescent and Holton Road.

“Our vision is to get more people shopping local and help rejuvenate our high streets. We really don’t want to lose them! The aim of this pilot is to see how well AppServe works, but you’ll be able to get some great deals in the process. We really need your support! We’re looking to achieve 1000 downloads during the pilot!”
