It had been a good week for Lee Selby, training had been going great, he was enjoying his time in Vegas, dubbed ‘The Mecca’ of boxing and was fully prepared for his fight against Jonathan Barros.
Well, this was until the 11th hour as his IBF Featherweight title defence had seemingly been called off at the 11th hour due to Barros ‘not meeting NSAC licensing requirements.’
The day before the cancellation, Lee had been on stage at the press conference stating ‘how happy he was to be fighting at the mecca of boxing’. He gave a humble and gracious speech, telling the audience who may not have known too much about him how far he had come since turning professional in 2008, boxing in small leisure centres and halls, and now living a childhood dream of fighting at the MGM grand in Las Vegas.
The cancellation was announced live on stage during the ‘weigh in’ at the MGM grand, to the dismay of fans, with Lee commenting ‘he was almost in tears’ but ‘very appreciative of the travelling support’. No reason was given for Barros being unable to compete except ‘he did not meet NSAC licensing requirements’.
Lee is set to face the winner of the main event of the evening, Carl Frampton and Leo Santa Cruz, and he hopes to get a quick under his belt, before this fight later in 2017.
It must be absolutely gutting for Lee, who had put in the hard work and training for fight but we have no doubt he’ll back ASAP representing Barry.
A video was posted by this morning, Saturday 28th of January as a message to his fans.
