Barry Round Table Start 60th Year with Community Presentation

Wow, what a year 2016 was for Barry Round Table! Its main fundraiser (the community Santa Sleigh) made 25 appearances in total, covering nine areas, three supermarkets, 30 miles of streets, 360+ man hours and 4300+ sweets – and it was all made possible by the seven Round Table members and support received from six local groups and 18 community sponsors. Together they raised over £4000 which will be used to support local good causes and charities in and around Barry.

The Santa Sleigh wouldn’t be as successful as it is without the support from the local scouting and sea cadets groups and as a thank you, Barry Round Table presented each group with a donation towards 2017 activities and created & issued a new ‘Santa Helper’ camp badge for all the leaders and young people who came out – a massive hit with the leader and young people!

As an extra element to supporting the community we invited local groups to apply for a small equipment grant via our Santa Christmas Wish and are pleased to say that 15 groups were granted equipment including water toys for the Barry Beavers Disabilities Swimming club, tea and coffee for The Castaways Club, printer and inks for Forgotten Families group, cricket balls for Barry Athletic Youth Cricket Club and indoor games for 5th Barry Scouts to first aid kits for local sports clubs.

In addition to the sleigh activity, December saw Barry Round Table create and launch a charity calendar which started with an amateur photographer competition (with over 35+ entries submitted). The calendar development was supported by sponsorship from local community businesses and on the 11th January 2017 at Barry Town United Club House, the club hosted a presentation night – inviting those who had sponsored the calendar, competition winners and community groups that they were supporting.
