Penarth Rocks – Get Ready

We’re continuing our focus on Penarth Rocks, we’ve spoken to Sarah Brown and Too Toned and now next up on our list, is the soulful funk act, Get Ready! So here we go!

Tell us a little about the band, how long have you been around?

“Get Ready!” are a band based in South Wales, the name came from the old 1966 Temptations song. We’ve been together for just over 2 years now with a few lineup changes along the way. The band is made up of some shall we say ‘seasoned’ local musicians – we have Barrians Rob Weekley (the “silver fox”) on keyboards and Gary James on drums, Brian Konten from Cardiff on bass, and Ceri Binding (a Penarthian) on guitar, all fronted by the significantly younger Ms. Suzi Chunk from the North East but adopted Cardiffian nowadays on lead vocals.

What are your favourite songs to perform?
From our experience tracks by artists such as Chic and Stevie Wonder go down particularly well. Chic’s “Good Times” was released in 1979 and it’s still being played on the radio some 37 years later – those songs don’t seem to age at all, and younger audiences get it too. “Superstition” (Stevie Wonder) and “We are Family” (Sister Sledge) are kind of dance floor anthems for us, I guess any song where the intro gets an instant positive reaction is exciting for a band because we can sense that people are enjoying what we’re doing, and that’s what it’s all about.

What other acts have influenced the band?
Some of our favourite artists include Marvin Gaye, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Chic, Sister Sledge. We love those classic tracks going back to the whole Stax/Motown era through to 70’s and 80’s soul/funk/disco – it’s all good. Every song evokes a good time memory of where you were when you first heard it.

What’s been the favourite gig you’ve ever done?
It’s usually our last one, hopefully it will be this one! We do feed off an enthusiastic audience reaction, so whenever we can interact with the audience it lifts us up, makes it all sound smoother and funkier – a virtuous circle. Those gigs really become more than the sum of their parts.

What can people expect from you at Penarth Rocks?
The Paget Rooms is a superb local venue for live music events and we’re hoping to bring a whole lot of energy and Sweet Soul Music to Penarth Rocks. We’re all about soul & groove to make you move – so if we can get people dancing and enjoying the classic tracks that we also love then that’s mission accomplished.

What other gigs do you have coming up in 2017?
We have more gigs booked within South Wales throughout the rest of 2017 in Swansea, Newport and Abergavenny, we also have local dates coming up in Barry and Cardiff and more being added weekly. To keep up to date please do check out our latest events advertised via our Facebook page at
