Local Chairty: Saints – St Athan Parks celebrates Aviva funding

10th January 2017; the local charity Saints, set up to improve the areas of play in St Athan won £1000 following an announcement recently by the Aviva Community Fund, pushing their total raised funds over £5000.

The funds awarded to Saints from the Aviva Community Fund will be used to improve the accessibility to and within the site. The money was awarded to Saints for the proposal of installing a pathway from the street to the park to allow easier access for all, with wheelchair and prams specifically in mind. There were also plans to improve the dilapidated seating area.

Saints competed with 430 other local organisations around the UK to receive funding as part of the Aviva Community Fund 2016. The nationwide initiative which launched in September called upon passionate local residents to submit a project close to their heart to be in with a chance of securing funding ranging from up to £1,000 to £25,000.

Each organisation had to galvanise the support of their local community to vote for their entry in six categories: health, disability and well-being; supporting the younger generation; supporting the older generation; sport in the community; environment (in association with The Mirror) and community support. Over 5 million votes were placed with Saints winning 1068 votes in total.

Cllr David A Elston, Saints Trustee said: “This is another huge step in the right direction. The team of trustees and volunteers that help and form Saints have worked incredibly hard and we are always grateful for all the support and well-wishing received. Each time we enter into a competition, there is always the worry we may not win or may not raise as much as we hoped but our Campaigns Manager Charlotte Jennings, Chairperson Lisa Austin and Treasurer Sally Gardiner always energise the community spirit and exceed any expectations. I really am excited to see where this will lead next and cannot thank both the community, the voters and Aviva enough.”
