Made it your mission to get fit in 2017? Live in Barry? Check out these mum-friendly gyms.

1. Atlantic Way Crossfit

When: Classes run early morning, lunchtime and evening. Timetable on their website.
Cost: First class is free. After that, classes are £7 drop in or you can select a membership package that suits you.
Where: Unit 15B Atlantic Way, Barry, CF63 3RF
Contact: 01446 733391, laura@atlanticwaycrossfit.com or visit www.atlanticwaycrossfit.com
What: CrossFit is a sure-fire way to lose weight, get fit and meet wonderful people in the process. Will you feel out of your element initially? Possibly. But feel the fear and go for it anyway. You won’t be disappointed.
Coaches and co-founders Laura and Cara are kind, welcoming and enthusiastic. Everything you do there is scaleable and they’re used to coaching pregnant women and new mums, so can help you find a movement or weight that will work. The format is usually a warm-up, then some focused work on specific movements, and then a workout of the day to end before a cool down. CrossFit is empowering. It’s not about getting skinny, it’s about getting stronger – both physically and mentally.

Clue’s in the title with this one. It’s a handy gym in a good location. There are some free classes included in the membership if you can make the timings, but the biggest selling point for mums is that it’s open 24/7. Perfect when you lose track of night and day and are struggling to get to peak time classes around the demands of parenthood, nursing and/or work commitments. Plenty of cardio and weight equipment, plus a punch bag.

What: Personal training, nutrition advice and a health check. For those seeking a guided lifestyle overhaul or want a gentle, tailor-made return to fitness after having your baby, this small but professional outfit on Barry’s Park Crescent is well worth looking into. A major selling point is that it is a child-friendly gym space. Kids are welcome to join in parents’ training sessions or play a game on the gym’s child-safe tablet while you work up a sweat.

Mt Fitness at The Mount Rooms

Cost: Around £30 a month
Where: The Mount Rooms, Porthkerry Road, Barry CF62 7XY

What: So excited about this one. The newly opened Mount Rooms hotel in Barry has a new gym to add to its portfolio. MT.Fitness is launching on 16 January 2017. A 24/7 operation, it’ll be run by fitness professionals James Eaton and Stacey Niblett (also a mum), who started as Pro-Symmetry Fitness running outdoor sessions in Rhoose. Olympic weightlifting, tyres, ropes, personal training opportunities… there’ll be something for everyone. And again, it’s 24 hours so perfect for parents struggling to get to classes at peak time and starting to feel like their bum cheeks are dragging behind their knees. They’ll also be running indoor and outdoor classes, too. Exciting times.

What: I can’t claim to have tried this but it sounds like a good option for those nervous about heading into a gym but seeking a gentle start or reintroduction to fitness. The sessions appear to last 30 minutes and are based on circuit or interval training sessions – short bursts of activity on different stations using fluid resistance that automatically adjusts to your fitness level. balls… you’ll be pushed to your limit and love it.
